2025 has been a rollercoaster ride for Tourism India. A whirlwind of milestones — from the Kumbh Mela and the Rann Utsav to new flights and routes transforming connectivity, from developing new destinations to battling crises within and without, the year was packed with major events. Here’s a quick look at the highs and lows of the year gone by — the good, the bad, and the ugly. As the industry grows from strength to strength, may this be a blueprint for things to come.

After years of post-pandemic rebuilding, this year the industry shifted gears into high growth mode, driven by robust domestic demand, rising global interest, and unprecedented policy intervention despite geopolitical tensions, tragic crash and IndiGo crisis. From state-led tourism reforms to major aviation network expansions and landmark hospitality investments, the year strengthened India’s standing as a future global tourism powerhouse with rising disposable income, infra upgrades and 50 new destinations on its way.

Tourism takes centre stage in economy
In 2025, tourism was no longer treated as a soft-power sector — this year saw it placed at the heart of the country’s economic strategy. With travel services exports touching record highs and states actively rolling out tourism-friendly policies, the sector’s contribution to GDP reached 9 per cent.

Aviation network
If 2024 set the pace, then 2025 was the year India’s aviation sector truly spread its wings. Airlines unveiled a wave of new domestic and regional international routes, boosting connectivity across tier II and III cities. IndiGo, Air India Express, Vistara, and newcomers expanded aggressively despite occasional operational disruptions.

Hospitality upgrade
Hospitality sector recorded one of its strongest years in a decade. Major global brands expanded their footprint, luxury and lifestyle hotels entered urban hubs, and boutique experiential stays gained momentum.

Leadership role
The combined impact of 2025’s reforms, expansions, and innovations positioned India as a rising global tourism leader. The year proved that India’s travel ecosystem is not just recovering, it is evolving into a resilient and globally competitive force.
