Mountain destinations are witnessing rising demand for immersive, slower-paced travel experiences beyond conventional sightseeing. Summit Hotels & Resorts has entered Sikkim’s retreat segment with the launch of Summit Signature Retreat Pangthang, strengthening its Northeast footprint while aligning with evolving traveller preferences for wellness-led, destination-focused hospitality.

Summit Hotels & Resorts has announced the opening of Summit Signature Retreat Pangthang in Gangtok, marking its entry into the retreat hotel segment in Sikkim. The 38-room property, launched on 22 January 2026, is located on a hilltop in Pangthang, offering unobstructed views of the Eastern Himalayas, including Mount Kanchenjunga.

Set amid pine plantations and mountain landscapes, the retreat is positioned for travellers seeking seclusion and immersive nature experiences. While within driving distance of Gangtok’s main township, the elevated location offers a quieter setting removed from urban activity.

Commenting on the launch, Sumit Mitruka, Founder & Managing Director, Summit Hotels & Resorts, said, “Gangtok and the surrounding region are seeing growing interest from travellers who are looking for deeper engagement with nature and a strong sense of place, beyond conventional sightseeing. Summit Signature Retreat Pangthang reflects our evolving approach to destination-led hospitality in the mountains, where wellness, environment, and local context come together in a subtle and thoughtful manner.”

He added that the opening strengthens the group’s presence in the Northeast and aligns with its long-term strategy of developing distinctive destination hotels.

Accommodation and wellness focus

The property features 38 rooms across categories, including superior rooms, deluxe rooms, premium suites, attic suites, and luxury suites. All rooms have private balconies overlooking the Himalayan landscape, with select suites offering separate living and dining areas for longer stays. In keeping with regional climate and sustainability considerations, rooms do not include air conditioning or minibars.

Wellness is positioned as a central element of the retreat experience. The hotel houses a dedicated spa offering specialised treatments, alongside spaces for yoga and meditation designed to complement the natural surroundings.

Dining and event infrastructure

Summit Signature Retreat Pangthang includes a multi-cuisine restaurant serving Sikkimese, Indian, and international dishes, along with a sun deck facing Kanchenjunga. The property also features a banquet hall of approximately 5,000 square feet, accommodating over 500 guests, suitable for destination events, retreats, and intimate social gatherings.

The retreat forms part of the Summit Signature Series, a category within the group’s portfolio focused on experience-driven properties with enhanced design and service standards.

Founded in 2009 and headquartered in Siliguri, Summit Hotels & Resorts operates over 30 hotels and resorts across more than 17 destinations in East India. The group has outlined a growth target of 50 properties by 2030, alongside expansion into niche sub-brands and enhanced digital platforms to increase direct bookings.
