Rapid fuel price spikes are harder for airlines to absorb, as airline companies often lack time to adjust pricing, operations, and capacity strategies, stated International Air Transport Association, adding that sudden changes in jet fuel prices pose greater challenges for airlines than sustained high costs.

Industry analysis shows airline profitability is highly sensitive to the speed of fuel price increases. When prices remain elevated but stable, airlines can gradually adapt through fare adjustments, efficiency improvements, and capacity optimisation. However, sharp and sudden fuel price rises can outpace revenue adjustments, placing pressure on operating margins and increasing the risk of financial strain across the aviation industry.
