India’s regional aviation and the case for indigenous aircraft manufacturing

As India enters 2026, its aviation growth is no longer concentrated around metropolitan hubs. The centre of momentum has shifted decisively towards tier-II and tier-III cities, driven by decentralised economic growth, expanding industrial corridors, rising household incomes, and a sustained upswing in domestic tourism. What was once viewed as peripheral demand has now become a core engine of aviation growth.

India has firmly established itself among the world’s largest aviation markets, with annual passenger traffic crossing 170 million, and domestic travel accounting for the bulk of incremental growth. A growing share of this traffic is originating from non-metro markets. Over the past two years, several regional airports have recorded 40–90% year-on-year passenger growth, highlighting the depth and durability of demand beyond major cities.

Regional aviation in India has clearly transitioned from being policy-enabled to demand-validated, setting the foundation for deeper investment, ecosystem maturity, and long-term capacity building in the years ahead.

Infrastructure expansion supporting regional networks

This demand shift has been matched by a rapid expansion of airport infrastructure. India now has more than 160 operational airports, more than double the number a decade ago. This expanded network has materially improved access to air travel across the country and enabled airlines to build denser, more geographically balanced domestic networks.

Regional connectivity initiatives have played a catalytic role in translating this infrastructure into traffic. Over 600 regional routes have been operationalised, linking a wide range of smaller and previously underserved airports. Collectively, these routes have carried over 15 million passengers, reinforcing the commercial relevance of regional air travel.

The sector’s focus is now evolving from rapid network expansion to improving the economics, reliability, and sustainability of regional operations, ensuring that newly connected markets mature into stable, long-term contributors to India’s aviation ecosystem.

Aircraft economics are now central to sustainability

Despite strong demand, the sustainability of regional routes remains highly sensitive to operating economics. Most regional services in India continue to rely on imported aircraft platforms that were not originally designed for India’s operating conditions. These aircraft are typically optimised for longer sectors, higher yields, and more uniform infrastructure environments.

In contrast, Indian regional routes are characterised by short stage lengths, high-frequency operations, variable runway conditions, and intense cost sensitivity. In such markets, aircraft efficiency, maintenance simplicity, and utilisation flexibility directly determine route viability. Even marginal cost inefficiencies can significantly impact profitability.

As airlines expand regional networks at scale, aircraft suitability is emerging as one of the most decisive variables in sustaining growth.

The growing relevance of region-specific aircraft

The case for region-specific aircraft in India has moved from concept to an active part of policy and industry discourse. The Indian government and aerospace ecosystem are now aligning around the need for aircraft that match the unique operational realities of the country’s expanding regional market.

The government envisages such platforms as more cost-effective than comparable global models, addressing short-haul economics and runway performance requirements specific to India’s regional network.

These efforts reflect broader strategic backing. The Bharatiya Vayuyan Adhiniyam, 2024, which came into force on 1 January 2025, modernised India’s aircraft regulatory framework to better support design, manufacturing, and certification within the country, strengthening the ecosystem for indigenous platforms.

In parallel, the government’s continued emphasis on regional connectivity through schemes such as UDAN has created a durable demand base for aircraft suited to smaller markets and higher-frequency operations.

The discussion around region-specific aircraft is therefore no longer aspirational; it is increasingly operational, supported by policy frameworks, planned domestic programmes, and a clear line of sight towards locally developed platforms entering service.

Domestic aircraft development and ecosystem depth

Domestic aircraft development carries implications well beyond fleet economics. Aircraft manufacturing is a high-value, technology-intensive activity that anchors capabilities across engineering, advanced materials, avionics, software, and precision manufacturing.

India has already built a strong base in aerospace components and engineering services. Moving into indigenous aircraft platforms allows the ecosystem to progress up the value chain, fostering deeper supplier networks, higher skill intensity, and long-term industrial resilience. It also enables tighter coordination between designers, operators, and maintenance providers, improving lifecycle efficiency.

From a strategic standpoint, recent global supply-chain disruptions have reinforced the importance of domestic capability. Greater control over design, manufacturing, and support enhances predictability in fleet planning and reduces exposure to external shocks.

From connectivity expansion to capability building

Regional aviation in India has reached an inflection point. Demand, infrastructure, and network reach have expanded rapidly. The next phase will be defined by how effectively this growth is sustained.

Aligning regional connectivity with region-specific aircraft and stronger domestic manufacturing capability offers a clear pathway forward. Pursued with global standards, disciplined execution, and long-term vision, this approach can ensure that India’s regional aviation growth remains rapid, resilient, efficient, and globally relevant.
