India’s tourism market is driven by a massive domestic travel base, said Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Union Minister of Culture and Tourism. On India’s comparison with destinations like Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Singapore, he said, “This comparison is like comparing apples and oranges because these countries do not have domestic tourism on the scale India does. While international arrivals, including NRIs and OCI cardholders, are around two crore, India recorded 294 crore domestic trips in the last year. These include travel for business, leisure, weddings, healthcares and spiritual purposes, reflecting the enormous strength of India’s domestic tourism economy.”
